ATMA CENA does not operate a clinic in Atlantic Canada. This article is for Halifax patients who want an honest map of what's locally available — and how ATMA CENA's coordinated care model can still support care from Edmonton or Calgary while a Halifax-area therapist remains the primary therapeutic relationship. Halifax has one of the few publicly funded ketamine programs in Canada at the QEII Health Sciences Centre, alongside an active private market: NovaKet Infusion Clinic, Coastal Ketamine, ANSR Clinic, BrainStim, Holos Integrative Health, and others. CFB Halifax / HMCS Stadacona's military and veteran population makes Veterans Affairs Canada coverage particularly relevant here.
Key takeaways
- ATMA CENA does NOT operate a Halifax member clinic. Halifax patients can still work with ATMA CENA via the coordinated care model — the existing Halifax therapist stays the primary therapeutic relationship while ATMA CENA's network provides medical oversight and infrastructure.
- The QEII Health Sciences Centre operates a publicly available IV ketamine program for treatment-resistant depression, led by Dr. Abraham Nunes — currently capacity-limited and on a compassionate-use basis pending QEII Foundation expansion funding.
- Active Halifax private clinics include NovaKet Infusion Clinic, Coastal Ketamine, ANSR Clinic, BrainStim Halifax, and Holos Integrative Health.
- Veterans Affairs Canada covers IV/oral/intranasal/cream ketamine for service-related TRD and chronic pain — particularly relevant for CFB Halifax / Stadacona veterans.
- Nova Scotia does not regulate psychotherapy as a reserved act; the Nova Scotia College of Counselling Therapists protects the title "Registered Counselling Therapist" but does not restrict the practice of counselling.
ATMA CENA in Halifax: an honest picture
ATMA CENA's corporate clinics are in Edmonton and Calgary, with member clinics across Alberta, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Quebec. ATMA CENA does not operate in Atlantic Canada. The honest framing for a Halifax patient researching ketamine therapy:
- The ATMA CENA information call can help you map options without prescribing them: confirm whether a Halifax local provider's model fits your indication, evaluate the QEII pathway eligibility, and discuss whether the coordinated care model — your existing therapist working with ATMA CENA's medical infrastructure — is the right approach.
- The coordinated care model lets a Halifax-area therapist remain your primary therapeutic relationship while ATMA CENA's network provides physician oversight, screening, and the dosing infrastructure that Halifax does not yet have widely available.
- Local Halifax options are reviewed below.
What is ketamine-assisted therapy?
Ketamine therapy uses sub-anaesthetic doses of ketamine — a Health Canada-approved anaesthetic — to treat conditions including treatment-resistant depression, PTSD, anxiety, OCD, and chronic pain. Health Canada has approved ketamine as an anaesthetic; psychiatric use is off-label, a legal and common practice in Canadian medicine. Spravato (intranasal esketamine) is Health Canada-approved for treatment-resistant MDD as of May 2020.
When ketamine is paired with structured psychotherapy before, during, and after dosing, the treatment is called ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (KAP) or ketamine-assisted therapy (KAT). For the full mechanism breakdown, see What Is Ketamine Therapy?.
How ketamine works
Ketamine acts on the brain's glutamate system through NMDA (N-methyl-D-aspartate) receptor antagonism, triggering a downstream surge of glutamate, AMPA receptor activation, and BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) release that stimulates synaptogenesis — the formation of new neural connections within 24 to 72 hours of a dose (Lullau et al., 2023). Conventional antidepressants take 4 to 6 weeks to act; ketamine can produce antidepressant effects within 2 to 72 hours of a single IV dose. The Canadian Network for Mood and Anxiety Treatments (CANMAT) places IV racemic ketamine as a third-line treatment for adults with treatment-resistant depression (TRD) (Swainson et al., 2021).
The QEII public ketamine program
The QEII Health Sciences Centre's Mood Disorders Clinic operates one of Canada's few publicly available ketamine programs for treatment-resistant depression, launched March 2023 and led by Dr. Abraham Nunes (Dalhousie University, Department of Psychiatry).
| Program lead | Dr. Abraham Nunes (psychiatry, Dalhousie) |
| Setting | Mood Disorders Clinic, QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax |
| Indication | Treatment-resistant depression |
| Modality | IV racemic ketamine infusions (not Spravato) |
| Funding | Compassionate-use basis; not formally publicly funded |
| Capacity | Limited (approximately one patient every two weeks at the time of publication) |
| Referral pathway | Through Nova Scotia Health Mental Health & Addictions; psychiatry referral required; documented exhaustion of other treatment options |
| Research | DALKETCLIN study (Dr. Nunes, PI) — Clinical Predictors of IV Ketamine Response in TRD |
The QEII Foundation has been raising funds (~$370,000 target) to expand to roughly eight treatments per day for a two-year pilot, intended to demonstrate outcomes for stable provincial funding. Confirm current capacity with Nova Scotia Health.

The Field Trip Health, Numinus, Mindspace, Lift, and Reset chains do not have a confirmed Atlantic Canada presence at the time of writing.
Nova Scotia regulatory framework
Federal — Health Canada. Ketamine is a Schedule I controlled substance, prescribed off-label for psychiatric use. Spravato is Health Canada-approved for TRD as of May 2020.
Provincial — College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (CPSNS). Off-label ketamine prescribing falls under general controlled-substance prescribing standards rather than a specific ketamine policy. Physicians must consult the Nova Scotia Prescription Monitoring Program (NSPMP) before prescribing, must establish an in-person patient relationship, and may not prescribe controlled substances solely via mail or fax.
Nova Scotia College of Nursing (NSCN). Nurse practitioners with appropriate competencies may prescribe controlled substances including ketamine within their scope.
Psychotherapy regulation in Nova Scotia. Unlike Ontario, Quebec, and other provinces, Nova Scotia does not regulate psychotherapy as a reserved act. The Nova Scotia College of Counselling Therapists protects the title "Registered Counselling Therapist" (RCT) but does not restrict the practice of counselling. The practical implication: Halifax KAP teams have more flexibility to assemble than they would in Ontario or Quebec, but the medical / dosing component remains physician- or NP-governed.
Nova Scotia public coverage and insurance
Nova Scotia Pharmacare. Spravato is not on the standard provincial formulary at the time of writing. Generic ketamine for psychiatric use has no Pharmacare pathway.
Nova Scotia Health. The QEII program (above) is the public-system option for eligible TRD patients.
WCB Nova Scotia. Reviews ketamine claims case-by-case.
Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC). Particularly relevant in Halifax (CFB Halifax, HMCS Stadacona). VAC covers IV, oral, intranasal, and compounded-cream ketamine for service-related TRD and chronic pain on a case-by-case basis. VAC does NOT cover ketamine-assisted psychotherapy specifically (the psychotherapy wraparound), citing insufficient evidence at the time of last review. The drug itself is covered with prescriber justification.
Private insurance. Coverage varies. Spravato is the form most likely to be covered with prior authorization for documented TRD. Generic IV/IM ketamine for psychiatric use is generally not covered. Alberta Blue Cross's psychedelic-assisted therapy coverage does not extend to Nova Scotia residents.

Frequently asked questions
Does ATMA CENA have a clinic in Halifax? No. ATMA CENA does not operate in Atlantic Canada. Halifax patients can still work with ATMA CENA via the coordinated care model — your Halifax-area therapist remains the primary therapeutic relationship while ATMA CENA's network provides medical oversight and infrastructure.
Is the QEII public program right for me? The QEII program is gated by psychiatry referral and strict TRD eligibility, and capacity is limited. If you have documented TRD, a referring psychiatrist, and the time to wait for a slot, the QEII program is a strong public-system option. If you need access sooner or your indication is broader (PTSD, anxiety, OCD), the private market is more accessible.
Does VAC cover ketamine therapy for veterans? VAC covers IV, oral, intranasal, and compounded-cream ketamine for service-related TRD and chronic pain on a case-by-case basis. VAC does NOT specifically cover ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (the psychotherapy wraparound) at the time of last review. The drug itself is covered with prescriber justification.
Does Nova Scotia Pharmacare cover Spravato? Spravato is not on the standard provincial formulary. Generic ketamine for psychiatric use has no Pharmacare pathway.
Does WCB Nova Scotia cover ketamine? Reviewed case-by-case. There is no formal listing equivalent to WCB Alberta or WSIB Ontario.
How much does ketamine therapy cost in Halifax? Private IV ketamine runs roughly $500–$650 per infusion in Halifax (NovaKet); a 6-infusion course is $3,000–$3,900. Spravato programs start around $6,000 for an induction course. The QEII program is free for eligible patients but capacity-limited.
Do I need a doctor's referral? Most Halifax private clinics including NovaKet, Coastal Ketamine, ANSR, and BrainStim accept self-referrals. The QEII program requires psychiatry referral.
Can I drive after a ketamine session? No. Patients cannot drive for at least 24 hours after a session.
